Top Takeaway: Board Affirms Bradford as Interim Superintendent

The Fayette County Board of Education took several actions during its Aug. 17 meeting related to district leadership. The board voted unanimously to accept Superintendent Demetrus Liggins’ retirement, effective immediately, and will form a superintendent screening committee to guide the selection of the district’s next leader. The board also voted to name Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) Assistant Superintendent Bill Bradford as interim superintendent. He had already been serving as acting superintendent since June 10. FCPS will share additional information about the superintendent search process as it becomes available. 

“As we begin this new school year, the board remains focused on what matters most: supporting students, strengthening schools, and moving forward with care and purpose,” said Chair Tyler Murphy. “We know this has been a difficult time for the FCPS community, and we are committed to providing steady leadership for our students, families, and staff.”

Superintendent's Report

Interim Superintendent Bill Bradford shared a few back-to-school numbers and highlights, praising the work done to ensure all departments were prepared to support teachers, school staff, and the nearly 40,000 students we all serve.

"We were absolutely FCPS Ready last Wednesday," said Bradford, who visited seven schools with new principals to offer encouragement. "It's all about building relationships and offering a world-class education," he added.

Other Agenda Highlights

Financial update: The school board accepted the July monthly finance report.

Funds transfer for meal debt: Among the consent items approved was the transfer of nearly $22,000 from the General Fund to the Child Nutrition Fund. This ensures sufficient funds are provided to the nonprofit food service account for meals served in 2025-26 to students not eligible for free/reduced meals. The unpaid debt totaled nearly $62,000, and about $40,000 was already covered by private donations.

Intent to adopt and levy tax rates: The board voted to make the community aware of their intent to set the following property tax rates for the 2026-27 fiscal year:

  • 79.7 cents per $100 of assessed value of real estate property (down from 79.8 cents in 2025-26)
  • 81.1 cents per $100 of assessed value of personal property (down from 83 cents in 2025-26), and
  • 59.2 cents per $100 of assessed value of motor vehicle property (no change from 2025-26)

Although the real estate and personal property tax rates are lower than those assessed in FY26, they will allow FCPS to collect about 4% more in property tax dollars (roughly $21.9 million) to support FCPS students, staff, schools, and operations.

The Aug. 17 vote will trigger legal notices in the newspaper announcing the proposed change in rates, and the board will take final action at its Sept. 10 meeting.

Informational items: The agenda also contained several written reports including the updated 2026-27 athletic handbooks, the August construction updates, and revised Special Education procedures.
